Come explore routines and protocols that get your students out of their desks, using tools, talking, and engaging with the concepts. We’ll take a peek at how some teachers creatively facilitate student interactions in their Desmos classrooms.

 

January Coaching Corner: Closing the Lesson: Connecting Student Ideas to Key Learning Goals
Many brilliant student ideas are developed throughout a Desmos Math lesson. How can we use the Lesson Synthesis to consolidate the learning and give it focus? We’ll examine classroom videos and examples to explore various approaches to solidifying student ideas at the end of a lesson, including instructional routines and note-taking structures. You’ll walk away with ideas to incorporate into your next lesson to help your students consolidate and refine their ideas about the learning goals.

 

November Coaching Corner: Anatomy of an Activity: Structuring a Discussion Based on Students’ Ideas
How do you capitalize on students’ ideas and use them to drive discussion and reinforce key learning from a lesson? Let’s gather to explore ways we can intentionally use students’ thinking as a catalyst for discourse. Together we’ll analyze Desmos Classroom videos showcasing classroom discussions in action and how these teachers purposefully engage students to discuss their work. Walk away with a collection of questions, question stems, and prompts that will help you connect your students’ thinking in the moment to the lesson’s learning goals.

 

October Coaching Corner: Anatomy of an Activity: Launching for Student Success

How do you get all of your students to engage with Desmos Math activities and share their thinking? Let’s get together to explore ways we can sustain the positive math culture in our classrooms by tapping into our students’ intuition and eliciting their mathematical ideas. We’ll also check out some classroom videos to get a sense of how some teachers are setting up their students for success and bringing the Desmos Math 6–A1 program to life.

 

September Coaching Corner: Building a Math Community

How do you build a strong math community with your students? In this session, we’ll come together to discuss promising practices for building community and watch examples from other teachers using Desmos Math 6–A1. Join us to explore ways to intentionally maintain a classroom environment where students believe they are valuable contributors. April/May Coaching Corner: Desmos U – A Virtual Field Trip Inside Desmos Math 6–A1 Classrooms

As the school year comes to a close, let’s take a moment to recognize all that you and your students have accomplished! Through the magic of video, we'll take a peek inside some Desmos Math 6–A1 classrooms to see teachers and students in action. We’ll watch as teachers launch lessons, orchestrate productive discussions, and highlight student strategies. Our observations will help shape our time together as we share feedback and reflect on our own practices, taking time to consider this year’s successes and challenges. Finally, we'll give you some tips and tools to use as you look back on this year and make plans for the next.

 

March Coaching Corner: Orchestrating Discussions Using Snapshots and the Teacher Dashboard

How does sharing student work drive everyone’s learning forward? We’ve gathered the best practices for using the snapshot tool and the teacher dashboard. Join us to learn how these tools can support us in observing student work in real time and showcasing that work to generate class discussions. Walk away with resources to help you or your team in using these tools to showcase their students’ brilliance.

 

February Coaching Corner: Incorporating Student Supports and Modifying Lessons for Inclusivity

In this session, you’ll learn how the Desmos Math 6–A1 program is designed to celebrate student brilliance and create opportunities for teachers to cultivate and share their students’ mathematical ideas. We’ll focus on how to use the Teacher Moves and Student Supports, including making quick and intentional edits to lessons, to provide all students with access to grade-level mathematics.

 

January Coaching Corner: Using Student Work From Assessments to Plan for and Adapt Instruction

Join the Desmos Coaches for this one-hour session where we will examine the different types of assessments in the Desmos Math 6–A1 program and how they can help us learn more about student thinking. We'll examine resources to determine actionable next steps following an assessment to move our students' thinking and understanding forward.

Join the Desmos coaches to learn about the NEW Desmos grading tool that goes beyond just looking for right or wrong answers. You’ll walk away with ideas to support and sustain equitable grading practices, and learn how assessments can elicit and capture students’ thinking and help teachers gauge progress toward mathematical understanding.

We’ll go over some of the best techniques in using pacing and pausing to elevate students’ voices and agency, and help them develop a deeper understanding of the content.
